How do I go about applying to universities abroad (USA)?

Applying to American universities is a very different process from applying in the UK. You apply in September/October to each American uni individually, write essays and sit SAT tests. Very time consuming. If you are accepted, you are accepted unconditionally. You can apply and accept a place at an American uni and take a conditional place at a British uni as neither will be aware of the other. All you will lose is your deposit if you decide on the British uni. BUT there are also some big differences American unis require you to study many subjects, the courses last four years and you will be considerably less knowledgeable in your chosen field. American unis are incredibly expensive. In answer to your question on Cambridge vs Harvard; if you are a Physicist, Cambridge is more impressive. MIT or Caltec are probably the ones you should look at in the USandA.
