How do I remove the shift knob off of a manual pt cruiser?

Its tough to remove the shift knob. The only way to truly remove the knob is to pull up it. I had to use channel lock pliers, hammer and towel to remove mine. I wrapped the shift lever with the towel for protection. I opened up the pliers to fit around the shift lever. Then I used the hammer to hit the pliers in an upward motion. The job was easy for me because the knob/lever was from a junkyard car. So I was able to put the lever in the vise to hole it. That knob was stuck on with corrosion. Basically the shift knob is held on by a notch on the lever.
