Legsm, first let me say that if your “geek guy” said that he would not transfer the address book from the old computer to the new laptop due to risk of infection, then it is time to replace him. Any computer tech with more than five minutes of experience would know of simple ways to resolve that potential. The simplest is to take the hard drive out of the old computer and hook it up as an external drive to the new laptop. Any infections that may be on it will not come active UNLESS an infected program is run from that hard drive. Thus, if you are only copying off data such as an Outlook Express address book, pictures, or music, you will not get any infections on your new machine. The exception to this is MS Office data files such as Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. They, due to the utter lack of security built into MS Office, have the potential for “macro viruses” that could be transferred as they would be inside the documents themselves.
