I’m not real clear on why the external monitor would only function for POST, BIOS, and then the initial logo screen, unless it’s a matter of resolution support between the notebook computer and the external monitor. Post and initial boot don’t use any significant high resolution, but the process right after the logo screen does. You can prove this out normally by booting into safe-mode which also doesn’t run in the higher resolution. Safe-mode is accessed by pressing F8 every two or three seconds right after turning your computer on. At some point you’ll get the menu with your various options for startup. Select safe-mode or safe-mode with network and see if that doesn’t boot up to something you can see on the external monitor. If this test works, try and set the video resolution while in safe-mode to something lower then it was. If this test fails, then you might have more to worry about.
