“Hi this is Gary Wilson at America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College. Lions communicate in a variety of ways. They use scent as well as body language. Of course everyone’s familiar with the lion’s roar. They’ll roar for different reasons. Male lions will roar of course to advertise their territory to other lions and keep them away. Female lions in the pride will roar to maintain contact with other lionesses in that pride. So they’ll roar and this roar will carry for miles. So if a lioness is out on her own she can hear where her pride is and roar back and let them know how she’s doing. A lion pride takes on a scent all its own. And this is from the lions rubbing on each other. As they greet each other they’ll rub their head and neck on each other and so they recognize each other by scent. And the pride has its own scent.
