How do mussels reproduce?

0

Males mussels release sperm into the water. Females release eggs at the same time. It seems a wasteful process but it seems to work. The sperm fertilises the eggs (ova) and larvae are formed. At first these are free living as part of the plankton but eventually will settle on a suitable surface in become adult.
