Pacman frogs are known for being picky about their living conditions. If conditions are not ideal, the frogs go into either hibernation or a partial hibernation known as estivation. Hibernation is a normal part of a pacman frog’s life, but if it goes on for too long it could cause serious problems. During true hibernation, the frog will not eat and may even avoid water. Over long periods of time, the frog can lose weight, which sometimes leads to death. As long as you take care of the frog’s living space, it will go in and out of hibernation without problems. Install an aquarium thermometer on the inside wall of the aquarium. Put it about an inch below the top of the aquarium. Check the temperature regularly. A comfortable temperature for pacman frogs is 81 degrees F, but can go as low as 77 and as high as 88. Put a fluorescent light bulb inside the aquarium if you need to raise the temperature.
