Building an underground BBQ pit is a very simple procedure that requires no special tools, just an open space to dig in your backyard. The most difficult task of all when building and using an underground pit may be waiting for the food to cook, as it must lay smoking in the pit for several hours before it is ready. Dig a hole in your backyard 3 feet by 3 feet square and 3 feet deep. The pit can be larger if you so desire. Store the subsoil you dig out in a pile for use later. Heat a bed of coals in a wheelbarrow when you are getting ready to cook. You need enough coals to fill the pit 2-1/2 feet deep.
