How Do You Care For Calla Lillies?
Calla lilies are a tender perennial that originated in the tropical forests in southern Africa. These bold plants are noted for their glossy green leaves and striking blooms atop a single leafless shoot. Available in white and shades of pink, calla lilies are often used in wedding bouquets. Hardy in zones 7 to 10, calla lilies grow profusely and spread by an underground rhizome that looks like a thickened white root. When left unchecked, calla lilies quickly spread and can easily take over garden beds. In northern climates, calla lily can be grown in pots and summered outside or grown as a houseplant year round. Start calla lilies inside in late winter for spring planting. Plant the rhizomes to a depth of 4 inches in all-purpose potting and water thoroughly. Keep the soil evenly moist until young shoots appear. Place in a sunny window and water on a regular basis allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Move calla lilies outside to a sunny location when temperatures remain
