You might want to check out or buy a copy of Gail Damerow’s “Storey’s Guide to Raising Chickens” before you start. It has all the information you will need to get started with chickens. It isn’t hard to take care of baby chickens, but they have different requirements from the kinds of pets I think most of us are used to (cats, dogs, rabbits, etc). This book gives a good overview of how to take care of all kinds (and quantities) of chickens. You can buy hatching eggs, but it is easier and cheaper to buy day-old baby chicks. Day-old chicks are shipped a few hours after they hatch. They can be shipped from several hatcheries — we’ve used www.mcmurrayhatchery.com, but there are lots of others.
