The Mazda Multi-Purpose Van, or MPV, was manufactured with an alternating generator that provides power to the engine, battery, and accessories. This alternator can wear out over time, or become damaged and require replacement. The average backyard mechanic can exchange an alternator in an MPV in about thirty minutes. Step 1 Disconnect the battery at the positive terminal by turning the bolt counterclockwise. Disconnect the alternator’s terminal by turning the nut counterclockwise and removing the loop from the terminal bolt. Store these connectors away from the battery. Step 2 Remove the belt by pressing on the tension pulley arm firmly, then sliding the belt form underneath the idle pulley wheel. Release the tension pulley and the belt will slacken; it can then be removed from the alternator pulley wheel.
