How do you change yarn colour and incorporate another while knitting mid row?

I think you carried your yarn through the back with your heart and thus did not leave enough yarn to allow it to be relaxed? I will say color A for backing color and B for heart. You can tie your yarn (B) to the right hand needle stitch (at the back), twist it around the yarn (A+B), then start using the new color (B). For the heart, the first row will only be one or two stitches, you carry the first color (A) at the back for those few stitches and twist the yarn (A+B) to begin work again until you need the color again. If there is a gap of say more than 10 stitches tie in a new (small amount) for another heart. You can carry the yarn behind, for you until you feel comfortable and have your tension right I would suggest small amounts tied in. You do exactly the same thing on return (no tie needed) just twist colors and knit. The twist is to prevent holes. Kaffe Fasset’s books are a wonderful resource to learn about color work knitting. Good luck and enjoy the wonderful world of knitting
