How Do You Clean An Air Conditioner?
• Locate the air conditioner operator’s manual that came with your unit. Prepare to follow any special guidelines the manufacturer provides. • Identify the indoor evaporator. It usually sits on top of the furnace or plenum. You may or may not have access to it. Find the tubes that connect the outdoor condenser with the evaporator coil. Generally, one tube has insulation covering it. Make sure the insulation is intact. If not, replace it or secure it with duct tape. • Turn the electricity off to the air conditioner. • Look for a foil-wrapped piece of insulation on top of your furnace. If your furnace has this, you can proceed with cleaning the evaporator coil. If not, proceed to cleaning the outdoor condenser coil, because you have a sealed evaporator that only a trained technician should clean. • Remove the tape holding the insulation in place.
