This is the one and only time you should use soap on your cast iron pot. To remove the protective coating, use a scouring pad, hot water and soap. Some things you should not do to your cast iron pot are (1) never let it air dry, (2) never use standard dish soap to clean it and (3) never let it soak in a sink full of water.
