If your dog has discharge coming from his eyes, he likely has some type of conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the mucus membranes in the eye and can have many different causes. Allergies are a common cause of conjunctivitis in dogs.It is safe to attempt treatment at home; however, if the condition worsens or doesn’t respond to home care within a couple days, you should take your dog to a veterinarian. Using a wet, soft, warm washcloth, wipe the discharge from your dog’s eye three to four times a day. Apply artificial tears to your dog’s eyes six to eight times a day. Apply a warm damp compress made from a washcloth to your dog’s eye — one eye at a time — for five minutes a couple times every day.
