Gas cooktop grates can quickly accumulate grease and burnt on food debris from regular use. Food and grease left on cooktop grates can lead to a build-up of black residue on the bottom of pots and pans. Fill a large sink half full of hot water and add the concentrated liquid dish soap and ammonia. Remove the grates from the gas cooktop when they are cool to the touch. Place them in the sink and add hot water until the grates are completely submerged. Allow the grates to soak for six hours or overnight before draining the sink. Sprinkle baking soda on stubborn stains and use a damp nonabrasive scrubber to scour the surfaces of the grates.
