High resolution, variable bitrate Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) files come in two extensions, .m4p or .m4a. Songs with the .m4p extension are write protected and should not be converted to MP3 files, even though it’s possible. (Reference 1) But M4A files can easily be converted to MP3 using iTunes 7 or higher, a free audio software program that runs on both Mac and Windows computers. (References 2) Open iTunes and choose the “Music” playlist from the menu on the left. Go to the file menu at the top of the iTunes application and under “View” choose “List.” Find the M4A file you wish to convert to MP3 and drag it to the music file list window. It will be automatically imported to iTunes. Alternately, you can use the import function underneath “File” in the file menu. Highlight the M4A file with one click of your mouse and then click “Advanced” in the file menu. Next click “Convert Selection to MP3.” If it says “Convert Selection to AAC” or some other audio format, you’ll need to change it
