How do you determine ACCURATELY if a molecule is polar/non-polar using VSEPR theory?
You’re not doing anything wrong. CCL4 has polar bonds, but symmetrical shape so the dipoles get cancelled out. CF2CL2 has has polar bonds, you’d think the symmetrical shape would cancel out the dipoles, but actually, since F and CL are different atoms, they make the shape asymmetrical, and therefore the molecule itself ends up polar. So really … the SHAPE is symmetrical, but the different atoms attached on the C make the molecule asymmetrical. Hope I helped! Good luck.
