Garden pathways are susceptible to becoming weedy if the soil is not covered up with pavers or mulch. Wood chips make a great mulch for garden pathways because they are readily available, easy to obtain for free, breakdown slowly and provide a fairly level walking surface. To keep chipped pathways free of weeds, it helps to lay cardboard over the soil and then apply the chips. The cardboard effectively smothers weeds without using a drop of chemicals. Here’s how to do it. Gather up enough cardboard to cover the pathway. Appliance or grocery stores are great places to find large amounts of free, basic brown cardboard. Avoid cardboard that has a glossy finish or is printed with colored ink, because it may leach heavy metals and other toxins into your soil as it decomposes.
