It just takes a few simple tools and some hard snow to get started. Look for an open area with a few feet of hard-packed snow. If the top layer is a dusting of powder, brush it aside and dig down to see if there are icy layers underneath. Take a stick or wooden stake and stand it upright in the middle of your intended work area. Tie some string to the top of the stick to determine the length of your project.
