However, you can make your own variation of firecrackers with matchstick sulfur and save yourself some money and a trip to the store. Step 1 Put on a pair of safety goggles. These will protect your eyes should you make a mistake while creating your firecrackers. A thick pair of plastic goggles that shield your entire eye area are best. Step 2 Slide off the top portion of the matchbox, and set it aside so you are left with the bottom of the matchbox that holds all of the matches. Step 3 Cut half of the strike pad off.
