How Do You Make Homemade Soap With Caustic Soda?
Caustic soda is another name for lye. You cannot make soap without it. Unfortunately, it is extremely toxic, and care must be taken not to get caustic soda on your hands or in your eyes. Set up your soap making area in a well-ventilated room or outdoors. Homemade soap, despite all of the warnings, is one of life’s simple pleasures. It can be very economical, too. Line a 9″ x 12″ cake pan with wax paper. Wear a respirator, eye protection and rubber gloves. Mix carefully 3 cups of water and 1 cup of caustic soda together in a glass bowl, stirring gently with a spoon. Put a thermometer in it and set aside. Stir together 4 1/2 cups of olive oil, and 2 cups each of coconut and grape seed oils. Put another thermometer into the mixture. Pour the caustic soda mixture into the oil mixture slowly once the temperatures of both containers reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix with a stick blender until thick, but still pourable.
