How Do You Read A Typical Ruler?
A ruler is an important tool for making calculations and measurements. Whether for a school project, a construction project, or simply to see if an item will fit where you need it to, knowing how to use a ruler is a key skill. There are two standard types of rulers: the metric ruler and the English ruler. Often a ruler will include both types, one on either side. Learn to read both types and you can make measurements in both centimeters and inches. Find a straight line, such as on a piece of paper, to measure. Place the ruler parallel to the line. Hold it straight and line up the first mark on the left side of the ruler with the beginning of the line you’re measuring. Find the end of the line you’re measuring. Locate the mark it lines up with on the ruler. An English ruler is numbered from 1 to 12, with a long line located by each of these numbers.
