The Windows XP Recovery Console is a way to run repair and modification operations on your operating system without having to boot into XP itself. All you need is an operating system CD and you can boot into the Recovery Console and execute your operation, such as reformatting a hard drive or the entire operating system. Boot your computer from the Windows XP CD by placing it into the computer, rebooting the computer and pressing a key on your keyboard when you see “Press any key to continue booting from CD” appear on the screen. Press the “1” key to choose your main Windows installation and then press the “Enter” key. Enter your Administrator password and then press the “Enter” key to log in to the Recovery Console. Type “map,” press the “Enter” key, type “format c: /fs:ntfs” and then press the “Enter” key.
