Mothballs are a great way to protect a wool blanket that has been stored away, but the blanket can take on a mothball odor that can be a bit much. If that happens, though, there is no need to worry. The smell is temporary and easy to fix. With a little time and hardly any effort, the smell can be eliminated. Step 1 Lay the blanket outside in the sunshine. Bring it inside before dark and don’t allow it to get wet. You may need to do this again, but the sun will remove the odor if given enough time. Step 2 Place the blanket in the dryer with about five dryer sheets. Let it tumble around for about 5 minutes on air dry before checking the progress. If the smell persists, put it back in the dryer and repeat. Step 3 Place the blanket in a large plastic bag with three to five fabric softener sheets and tie it closed.
