Urethane is the most common surface finish for hardwood floors. Urethane comes in an oil-based, moisture-based and water-based finish, each composed of a different mixture of synthetic resins and plasticizers ingredients. Finishes are used to produce a very durable and moisture-resistant surface to the wood. Step 1 Moisten a sponge with water. Make sure not to apply too much water. Large amounts of water will cause the wood to swell, crack and splinter. Step 2 Wipe the stained area with the sponge.
