How do you train a malti-poo(dog) to go on walks with a leash?

Walking your dog on a leash teaches the dog many things. It is probably the most important thing you will do with your dog. If the dog is trying to bite the leash you need to be more assertive with him. As soon as the leash is on “start your walk” Don’t let the dog think it is play time and don’t let the dog walk you. Keep the dog moving in a forward motion at all times, eventually the dog will get used to the leash and love the time it has with you.

I use to have this problem as well. If the dog is not use to the leash then they are going to do that. Try buying dog treats if you did not already. When you are going to put the leash on him put the treat in front of him. He is going to be distracted by the treat to probably pay attention to what you are doing. Once you do this, take him outside when you see he is about to bite the leash call his name and give him a treat. He is going to get distracted by paying attention to you. If you continue to do this, it’s going to come to a point that he is going to stop.

My dog wouldn’t use a leash either when I 1st got her-so I bought a harness that goes on easily over the head and then soft fleece loops under the legs-works great! I can get it on her quickly and easily and when I walk her the leash is nearer her back and she walks with it just fine! It’s also easier to maneuver the dog with this type of collar/harness because it kind of lifts her up a bit when you pull her-and it’s not around her neck-so it’s not going to hurt her. Oh and by the way-you can call your puppy a malti-poo as that’s what they are sold as, right? Yes it is a mixed breed-but it’s okay to call him anything you want. That being said I have a Cavaton-she’s half Coton and half Cavalier Spaniel-she is adorable and I’m proud to have a Cavaton!! She was bred at a reputable breeder and well taken care of-so wish you nay-sayers would keep your opinions on these dogs to yourselves!!

Tips for dog training 1) Avoid giving your dog combined commands which are incompatible. Combined commands such as “sit-down” can confuse your dog. Using this example, say either “sit” or “down”. The command “sit-down” simply doesn’t exist. 2) When giving your dog a command, avoid using a loud voice. Even if your dog is especially independent/unresponsive, your tone of voice when issuing an obedience command such as “sit”,”down” or “”stay”, should be calm and authoritative, rather than harsh or loud. 3) Whenever possible, use your dog’s name positively, rather than using it in conjunction to reprimands, warnings or punishment. Your dog should trust that when it hears its name or is called to you, good things happen. His name should always be a word he responds to with enthusiasm, never hesitancy or fear.
