Ice is a wonderful material for making sculptures at home. Iis free, easy to work with and beautiful. Unfortunately, although ice is very interesting visually, it is not usually the best material for expressing your interest in color. If you would like to add a little color to an ice sculpture project, colored sand can provide the missing ingredient. With a little preparation, you can make colored sand ice sculptures at home in an afternoon. Place newspapers or an old tablecloth or sheet onto a large table. This project can get messy, particularly if children are involved. Fill an ice tray (or multiple trays) about 2/3 full with water. Add colored sand to each cube in the tray. Use a large piece of folded paper or cardstock to create a funnel for the sand. This will help you direct the sand more accurately.
