How Does a Scroll Saw Work?
Basics The scroll saw is used to cut wood with a freehand style. This means that the wood can be moved around to follow a pattern or drawing on the wood. It resembles carving without having to whittle away at the wood a little at a time; however, it is more difficult to create something three-dimensional with a scroll saw. Besides wood, scroll saws can cut materials such as plastic and metal. The saws are generally bench mounted to prevent shifting of the blade while in use. You can cut up to a 2-inch-thick piece of wood depending on the blade, and the width of the wood can be 12 to 18 inches, depending on the model. Setup The bench-mounted scroll saw includes a sturdy table, a saw arm that extends over the table, and the blade that extends from the saw arm to the center of the table. A hole in the middle of the table allows the blade to move down all the way through the wood. The blade on a scroll saw is thin so that you can turn the wood in different directions to create your pattern
