How does Amitriptyline / Generic Elavil work?
Elavil inhibits the direct active uptake of biogenic amines noradrenalin and 5-HT in to their respective neurons and thereby potentiates them. The uptake inhibition results in increased concentration of amines in the synaptic cleft in Central nervous system (CNS) and periphery. Elavil facilitates dopaminergic transmission in forebrain, which causes mood elevation.
