Steroid abusers generally default to one of the following tactics to ‘cheat’ a steroid test: • Using a blocking agent, such as Probenecid, theoretically reduces the excretion of steroid metabolites. These agents are not effective and are also on a list of banned substances for athletes. They can be easily detected in a drug test. • Diuretics dilute the urine by increasing the water content of urine. This has been combated by establishing a specific gravity test. This test establishes the gravity of a substance compared to the gravity of water. Diluted urine has a much lower specific gravity than normal urine. • Abusers often ‘substitute’ a non-drug user’s urine for their own. Female abusers generally do this by hiding a condom filled with ‘clean’ urine in the vagina.
