Biotechnology tools help in a number of ways. They are used by, fishery managers to determine if migrating fish populations have been designated as endangered or threatened so they can time when to open or close the fishery so that only populations that are viable are caught. Fishery managers also use biotechnology tools to establish ecologically sustainable fishing quotas and to help manage the capture fisheries through population identification, modeling, assessment, monitoring, and enforcement activities.
