How does distance education work?
At UMFK Distance Education is available through three methods; interactive television (ITV), the Internet and Video Conferencing. The faculty is primarily based out of the UMFK campus and instruction is provided through live broadcasts, archived video (VHS or online), live video links, web pages and the mail. Courses must be completed within a specific semester, even though you may never be on campus. All courses are fully accredited and may be applied to specific degrees or transferred to another institution.
Distance continuing education allows you to study at home or in your office, according to your own schedule… there are no classes to attend. Generally, each course comes with a manual that may be accompanied by CDs, DVDs, etc., depending on the nature of the course. As well, most courses incorporate websites with computer conferencing, e-mail, and computer-based quizzes using the World Wide Web as an innovative learning environment. Distance education provides a contemporary means through which the University of Guelph continues its tradition of outreach and open learning opportunities.
Athabasca University is committed to meeting your needs through flexibility in the design and delivery of its courses and programs. You can choose from two basic study modes—individualized study or grouped study. Distance education at NC State involves delivering regular on-campus courses to you. Full-time faculty members delivering lectures to full-time on-campus students are recorded and delivered on CD-ROM or downloaded video-stream from the web. You will receive lecture notes, handouts, and assignments typically via the World Wide Web. You will have a faculty academic advisor who will work with you to develop an individualized plan of study for your degree. You will have access to the resources of electronic reserves at the NC State libraries. You will be able to contact your professors and advisor easily by email or telephone.
