How does electromagnetic radiation stimulate molecules?

Electromagnetic radiaion is a term for a spectrum of transverse waves. Their wavelengths determine their properites but they all carry energy in one form or another. Th spectrum is as follows, starting with the shorthest wavelength: Gamma, X-ray, Ultra Violet, Visible light, Infra-red, Microwave and Radiowave. Because of their differing wave lengths, they act upon molecules differently. The higher the frequency, the higher the ionising power. This is where the energy supplied by the radiation disturbs electrons forom molecules causing ions to form. In metals this principal casues an alternating current to form – i.e. the way in which antenae work. The energy can also cause molecules to vibrate as heat is produced. This is what happens in a microwave oven (the water molecules are caused to vibrate more, resulting in heat being produced.) Ultra violet radiation can cause substances to release light that wouldnt otherwise be emmited – flouressant substances visable in a black-light. All t
