How does Essentia Water increase pH level to between 9.2 and 9.7?
A. Essentia Water uses a proprietary process called Ionic Separation. There are two ions in water. One is negatively charged (alkaline) and the other is positively charged (acidic). This process uses electrolysis to electrically split water into alkaline and acidic streams. We bottle only the alkaline stream. In doing so, we are bottling the water that has had the acidic ion removed, which naturally raises the pH of the remaining water. We are able to closely control the pH level by increasing the electrical current in the water. The higher the electrical current in the water, the more acidic ions will be removed resulting in an increase of the pH in the remaining water.
The explanation above is not entirely true. This process will not work with pure water because it is physically impossible to have water that contains an excess of OH– (alkaline) without the presence of a charge-compensating metallic ion such asMg+, Na+, or Ca2+. Similarly, any water that is acidic (excess H+ ion) must contain a compensating impurity ion such as bicarbonate or sulfate. Obviously, we all know water is "H20", so how would I remove either the H+ or the OH– and still have a pure balanced solution of water. Nature always trends toward equilibrium! Its much cheaper to take a tums instead of buying alkaline water if you really want an alkaline solution.
But, the entire process of pH balance is very highly and tightly regulated by your body including: kidneys, respiration rate, and calcium ion balance with bone to name a few factors. The body requires such tight regulation because protein structure (enzymes) are highly dependant on pH. Any minute change in pH with denature a protenin, yeilding the enzyme useless to perform its vital function. So even IF you were able to change plasma pH (which you cant by drinking alkaline water) you would denature your enzymes and die.
I would suggest getting your scientific information from a text book, such as Textbook of Medical Physiology by Guyton and Hall, instead of from bottled water companies claiming to aid in anything such as "joint pain, bone loss, headaches, lack of energy, tenderness, cravings, and a variety of unsatisfied cravings". Also, there are a number to missinformed doctors who push these products who clearly dont have access to Medcal Journals so please be cautious about where you get your infomation.
I would reccomend reading the chaperter on "Regulation of Acid-Base Balance" in the Textbook of Medical Physiology by Guyton and Hall.
