How does Organised Immigration Crime cause harm and what are the negative implications for the UK?
Illegal immigrants and victims of trafficking are vulnerable to exploitation by criminal gangmasters, who may pay very low wages (or none at all), and make inflated deductions for housing and transport that are often substandard and overcrowded. Some also use violence and intimidation. Victims of trafficking are exploited for the purposes of prostitution or for cheap labour, often forced or tied, for example, into the agriculture, catering, construction, fishing, and service sectors. In addition, both children and adults may be coerced to commit street crime, benefit fraud or begging. Some trafficking victims, particularly those employed in the sex trade, are bought, exploited and resold by a succession of criminal groups before and after arrival in the UK. Not all victims are duped from the outset.
