How does parrots sleep?
Parrots are truly sleeping when they tuck their face into their back feathers between their wings with one leg tucked up and their feathers are pouffed out. They can “rest” by closing their eyes and lifting up one leg but they’re not really in a true “deep” sleep. With that said, parrots are very light sleepers so they need to have a relatively quiet and dark room. There’s a lot of controversy over covering vs. not covering the cage at night- I’ve had several birds in my life and currently have an African Grey and I’ve never covered a bird. They need a lot of sleep to be healthy- about 10 hours. My bird gets more- I put her “to bed” by 8 pm and let her wind down, and I usually don’t give her breakfast until about 7:30 on the weekdays, a little later on the weekends.
