To the above poster: Many pipes have filters that fit into the stem and should be changed out each time the pipe is used. They’re mostly unnecessary though because pipe smoke is not supposed to be inhaled. Nicotine is still absorbed thru the soft tissue of the mouth but not the same super-addictive level as cigarettes; just enough to be pleasant. These factors though make switching from cigarettes to a pipe difficult since a former cigarette smoker will be inclined to inhale and smoke too much to try and get the nicotine level he’s used to. Pipe tobacco is meant to be drawn into the mouth (not lungs) savored and then exhaled. So pipe smokers don’t typically get lung cancer unless they’re inhaling. Pipe smokers can be susceptible to cancers in the mouth and throat though. The flavor of pipe tobacco is much better. Several pipe tobacco blends are flavored artificially with vanilla, whiskey, chocolate, cherry (just about any fruit flavor actually) and these blends also have very pleasant
