There are numerous “agents” (what sociologists call them) of socialization. Several examples are family (which includes parents), school, church (or other religious entities), friends/peers, work colleagues, media, etc. It varies greatly by class and gender, not only within a country, but also across societies/cultures. (I’ll focus on gender in my answer). For example, what is considered masculine and/or feminine in one society isn’t necessarily considered masculine or feminine in another. Entirely too many people erroneously believe that masculine/feminine corresponds to male/female respectively. That isn’t the case though.
