How does TCCF agree to sponsor the medical care of a critically ill child?
TCCF works primarily with the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children’s International Patients Department, which has a list of children from the Caribbean who require critical care. Once a case has been identified as urgent, we are usually contacted by the Hospital and asked to intervene. Because there is a standing fund, it sometimes takes only a matter of minutes for the Directors to agree, and a contract is signed to this effect with the hospital. In other instances, TCCF has been able to intervene in urgent cases identified to us by individuals or charitable groups in the Caribbean and arrange for an assessment at the Hospital for Sick Children. We have also worked with other public medical institutions in Toronto to intervene financially in critical cases. In many instances, TCCF works with other charitable organizations, such as the Herbie Fund, to jointly pay for the medical care of a child when the quoted amount is substantial.
