How does the NuvaRing work?
The NuvaRing contains the same hormones (estrogen and progestin) as the birth control pill and works just like the birth control pill. The only difference is that you absorb the hormones through the mucosa (skin) of the vagina instead of by swallowing them in a pill. Both the pill and the NuvaRing suppress ovulation so an egg is not released from the ovary every month. They also make the mucous at the cervix thicker so that sperm have a hard time entering and they change the environment of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) so that it’s not conducive to pregnancy.
