After dilating Annie’s eyes, the doctor looks through different lenses into Annie’s eyes to see which lenses makes Annie’s retina appear in focus to the doctor. When the doctor can see clearly into Annie’s eyes, she then knows that that lens will allow Annie to see things in focus.
