The European Commission has made forecasts (2006-2013) on the consumption of cereals that would be necessary to produce bioethanol to meet the annual use quotas established in Directive 2003/30/EC (5.75% of gas consumption in 2010, and 10% in 2020). The EC has concluded that by 2013, the grain used to produce bioethanol established in the Directive would represent 6.7% of the total cereal consumption that year. In the year 2007, this percentage would be 2% and in 2010, 3.9%. The EC foresees self-supply in the demand for cereals in the EU for this period, and exports. The analyses do not predict imports of bioethanol. On the other hand, the increasing efficiency of U.S. farmers is allowing them to produce a greater quantity of corn per cultivated acre, using the same amount of fertilisers. In the last 25 years, the performance of corn crops, according to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), has increased by 50%, while the quantity of fertilisers used has been maintained s
