How does the registration system work? What determines if I will get a specific course?
Penn uses an online system called Penn-In-Touch (PIT) and a phone registration system called PARIS for course registration. During advance registration periods, students “request” a particular schedule. All “requests” are processed together at the end of the advance registration period. Students are assigned to a particular course on a random basis if the course has no restrictions placed on it by the department offering the course. Restrictions on a course may include limits on class size, class year, and concentration of a student. Once restriction conditions are met, assignments are made on a random basis until capacity limits are reached. After initial schedules have been assigned the system reopens for a period of “drop/request” during which schedules may be rearranged, giving students the opportunity to “shop” for classes.
