I’m guessing as you probably are but heres my best shot. Of Mice and Men was about the time period of the Great Depression. The Lennie and George survive this time when most men aimlessly wander around the country by sticking together. They fight of loneliness which is the main theme of the book. The quote is refering to the book capturing the loneliness of the Great Depression and demonstrating it to the reader. Loneliness was the “essence of an age” the age being the Great Depression. Hope it helps.
