Water is gradually getting scarcer in the lower latitudes of our planet. The global climate change also exacerbates the situation. Contrary to the general perception, Turkey is neither a country rich in freshwater resources nor the richest country in her region in this respect. Turkey has only about one-fifth of the “water available per capita” in water rich regions, such as North America and Western Europe. We are also highly dependent on water in terms of energy production. Hydro-power is important for Turkey to meet the rising energy need. It is essential for food production as well. We believe that trans-boundary waters should be used in an equitable, reasonable and optimum manner.
