How does /workspace work on the SGI Altix 3700?

Due to performance issues, the SGI Altix 3700 86 TB workspace area has been divided into two 43 TB partitions, /work1 and /work2. Users are assigned a $WORKDIR inside one of these two partitions upon their first login based on whether their UID number is odd or even. Users with odd UID’s will be assigned to /work1, and users with even UID’s will be assigned to /work2.
