How has the technology used to produce magazines changed and developed over the years?
It certainly has – type used to have to be set up manually – individual letter in racks – then eventually it became cast – now it is done by computer and everything including images are digitised removing the complicated process of colour separatoin, and the need for off-set litho processes of old. The biggest thing that fuelled this was the old printing unions which had a stranglehold on the industry were replaced by electricians for the new electronic techniques and disappeared along with the old processes – it also means that copy can be printed anywhere in the world (wherever’s cheapest) or close to the point of distribution.
