How is African music distinct from music from other continents?
Polyrhythm (many rhythms/multiple voices all speaking to each other creating a beautifully complex tapestry of sound). Whether it is on the drums, strings, through voices, or horns, this unique form of rhythm is a unifying element in “African” music. The African continent, 53 countries large, has an incredibly diverse musical range. To quantify it properly, we would need many more pages! Usually, other lullabies from around the world consist of lush, mono-rhythmic compositions. African Dreamland is distinct from our other lullaby albums in that it can softly lull babies to sleep with beautiful polyrhythms. Now that’s unique! Additionally, the musical technique known as “call and response” is prevalent throughout African music. Even in some of the most relaxing and peaceful songs, you can find these elements. For example, in the song “Douyoré” (track 4 of African Dreamland), the lead singer’s lullaby is answered by a soft chorus. Lastly, music from Africa has its own distinct assortment
