How is Cryotherapy administered?

0

One way our physical therapist may administer cold therapy is with a flexible ice pack placed over the painful/injured area. The ice pack should be left on for 20 minutes. It should not be left on longer than 20 minutes because your body’s has natural response to warm the tissue to prevent tissue damage. Another way to administer cold therapy is through ice massage. This is achieved by freezing a cup full of water and then massaging the shaped ice into the painful/injured area. This process should take less than 5 minutes and your tissue should feel numb after the treatment. Coolant sprays may also be used with the benefit of a quick cooling of the tissue. Will the treatment hurt? The normal tissue sensation response during cryotherapy is cold followed by pain followed by numbness. This a quick process and is very well tolerated.
